Frequently asked questions
What if I see “Couldn’t Open Note Data” or a SwiftData error?
Messages such as “SwiftData.SwiftDataError error 1” mean the app could not open its saved note data. The error number alone does not identify the cause. Follow these checks before resetting the library or deleting any files.
Quit every copy of Inkquation
Quit from the app menu; closing a window is not enough. If older or test builds are also running, quit them all, then reopen only the build you intend to use. Multiple Inkquation processes cannot open the same library at once.
Check the build and when the error started
Note the app’s version and build number. If the error began after an update or a switch to a test build, record that change. Avoid trying a succession of older builds: their data formats may differ.
Check the library location
If the library is on an external drive, reconnect it and reopen the app. If you moved or renamed its folder and the screen offers “Locate Existing Library…”, select the original library folder again. This reconnects the location; it does not repair an incompatible data format.
If you want to keep your notes
Restarting or selecting the location again may not fix an incompatible data format or damaged data. Preserve the original library. Creating an empty library does not recover notes that cannot be read.
Quit every copy of Inkquation, then copy the entire library folder elsewhere for safekeeping. Include hidden files and companion folders, not just note.sqlite. The steps below show the default location. If you changed the location, preserve the folder at that location instead. You cannot export a new in-app backup while the library cannot open.
How do I start with an empty library instead of my existing notes?
Use these steps to start fresh in Inkquation for Mac. Your existing notes, folders, and tags will not appear in the new library. Rename the folders to preserve the original data without deleting it.
Quit every copy of Inkquation
Quit from the app menu (⌘Q), including any older or test builds. Closing a window does not quit the app.
Open the storage location in Finder
In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder… (⇧⌘G), paste the following path, and press Return.
~/Library/Containers/app.inkquation/Data/Library/Application Support/Rename the original library
Select Inkquation.app, press Return, and rename it as shown below. Leave its contents intact. Skip this step if the folder is absent. If the backup name already exists, add “-2” or another suffix to use a different name.
Inkquation.app→Inkquation.app.before-resetRename the location settings too
If InkquationStorage exists in the same location, rename it as shown below; otherwise skip this step. This clears the selected location and any pending move so the app uses its default location. A library you moved to an external drive or another folder remains there. If the backup name already exists, add “-2” or another suffix.
InkquationStorage→InkquationStorage.before-resetOpen only the Inkquation build you intend to use
The app creates a new, empty library at the default location. An empty note list confirms the reset. Opening another, older build can cause another error through simultaneous access or incompatible data formats. If an error persists, creating an empty library does not address its cause.
To undo this, quit every copy of Inkquation, give the newly created folders different names, and restore the preserved folders to their original names. This does not fix the reason the original library could not open.
